Supercritical Water Oxidation for PFAS Destruction: High-Temperature Treatment Approaches

Supercritical Water: A Powerful Destruction Environment

Water above its critical point (374°C, 220 bar) enters a supercritical state with unique physicochemical properties—dramatically reduced density, increased diffusivity, and altered solubility characteristics. In this supercritical state, oxygen dissolves miscibly, enabling complete organic compound oxidation without the formation of toxic byproducts typical of lower-temperature incineration. Supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) represents one of the most effective PFAS destruction technologies.

PFAS Destruction Efficiency

SCWO systems treating PFAS-contaminated water or concentrates achieve >99.9% PFAS mineralization under proper operating conditions (400–600°C, 230–250 bar, adequate residence time). The extreme oxidizing conditions in supercritical water overcome the C–F bond stability that protects PFAS from conventional treatment, converting fluorine to hydrogen fluoride that can be neutralized to harmless calcium fluoride.

Application for Concentrated Waste Streams

SCWO is economically most attractive for treatment of PFAS-concentrated waste streams—RO concentrate, spent ion exchange regenerant brine, or landfill leachate—where high PFAS concentrations amortize the capital and energy costs of supercritical operation. Treating dilute source water directly in SCWO systems is not economically feasible, but concentration-then-destroy approaches using SCWO for the concentrate stream show promising economics.

Scale-Up and Commercial Development

Several companies are commercializing SCWO for PFAS applications, with small modular units deployable at treatment plants or remediation sites. Department of Defense funding is supporting SCWO scale-up for AFFF disposal and groundwater remediation concentrate treatment. As PFAS waste regulations tighten, SCWO provides utilities and industries a path toward true PFAS destruction rather than transfer to other media
