Pitcher Filters and PFAS: Choosing Carefully
Pitcher filters are the most accessible water filtration option, but not all pitchers remove PFAS effectively. Standard Brita and similar pitcher filters using conventional activated carbon have limited PFAS removal capacity and are not NSF-certified for PFAS reduction. Consumers relying on standard pitcher filters for PFAS protection may be getting little or no actual reduction.
Several newer pitcher filter lines specifically formulated for PFAS removal have entered the market, using modified activated carbon or ion exchange resins designed for PFAS adsorption. These products — including certain ZeroWater, Clearly Filtered, and Epic Pure pitchers — have NSF P473 or similar certifications demonstrating meaningful PFAS reduction.
Gravity Filters for Off-Grid and Emergency Use
Gravity-fed countertop filters like Berkey and similar systems use multiple carbon block filter elements and can process large volumes without electricity or water pressure. These systems are popular in rural settings, RVs, and as emergency water backup. PFAS removal effectiveness varies significantly between gravity filter brands and depends on the specific filter elements installed.
When evaluating gravity filters for PFAS removal, look for third-party test data using NSF methods for specific PFAS compounds at realistic starting concentrations (≥200 ppt). Marketing claims of ‘removes 99%’ are meaningless without accompanying test data showing the compound tested, initial concentration, and filter life at which performance was measured.
Travel and Camping Solutions
Travelers visiting areas with potential PFAS water contamination can use straw-type personal filters or squeeze-bag filters with activated carbon. While these products primarily target biological contaminants, some carbon-based travel filters provide meaningful PFAS reduction. Verified options should be sought from brands that specifically test for and claim PFAS removal.
For camping near military bases, industrial sites, or known PFAS-contaminated areas, carrying pre-filtered water from a verified source is safer than relying on field filtration. Boiling water does not remove PFAS and may concentrate levels by reducing water volume.
