PFAS in School Water Systems: Lead and PFAS Co-Contamination and Education Policy

Schools as Environmental Risk Environments

School drinking water has received regulatory attention primarily through lead remediation programs following the Flint, Michigan crisis. However, PFAS co-contamination of school water systems is increasingly recognized as a parallel and potentially broader exposure issue for children.

Scope of School PFAS Contamination

EPA surveys and state testing programs find PFAS above health advisory levels in school water systems in many states. Schools near military bases, industrial facilities, and areas with PFAS-contaminated municipal systems are particularly at risk.

Federal Education and Water Policy

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law both include provisions supporting school water quality improvements. EPA’s Children’s Health Program has prioritized school PFAS testing as a childhood exposure reduction strategy.

Point-of-Use Filter Programs

Many states and local school districts are deploying point-of-use filters at drinking fountains and cafeteria sinks as interim PFAS protection measures. NSF/ANSI Standard 58 certified reverse osmosis units and Standard 53 certified filters with PFAS reduction claims are appropriate for school deployment.
