Granular Activated Carbon vs. Carbon Block: Performance Differences for PFAS Removal

Both granular activated carbon (GAC) and carbon block are widely used in water filtration products, but they differ significantly in how effectively they capture PFAS compounds. For households in areas with PFAS contamination, understanding these differences can make a meaningful difference in actual health protection.

The Physical Difference

GAC filters contain loose activated carbon granules through which water flows. Because the granules are not packed tightly, water can take paths of least resistance through the bed, limiting contact time with the carbon surface. Carbon block filters are manufactured by bonding activated carbon powder into a dense, solid matrix. Water must permeate through the entire block, ensuring thorough contact.

Performance Data

Studies comparing the two technologies under standardized PFAS challenge conditions consistently show carbon block outperforming GAC. Typical carbon block filters achieve PFOA and PFOS reduction rates of 95 to 99 percent. GAC performance is more variable, often ranging from 60 to 90 percent, depending on contact time, flow rate, and PFAS chain length.

Short-Chain PFAS Challenge

Both technologies struggle more with short-chain PFAS (PFBS, PFBA, and similar compounds) than with longer-chain varieties. Short-chain PFAS have lower molecular weight and weaker affinity for activated carbon surfaces. High-quality carbon block with extended contact time performs better with these compounds, but neither technology reliably achieves the same reduction rates as for PFOA and PFOS.

Filter Lifespan Implications

Carbon block filters are generally rated for lower flow volumes than GAC systems of equivalent size, because the denser matrix creates higher back pressure. Replacing carbon block filters on schedule is especially important in high-PFAS environments where the carbon may approach saturation sooner than the volume-based replacement interval suggests.
