Water Softeners and PFAS: What They Remove and What They Don’t

How Water Softeners Work

Water softeners use ion exchange to remove calcium and magnesium ions — the minerals responsible for water hardness — replacing them with sodium ions. This process addresses scaling in pipes and appliances, improves soap lathering, and can extend the life of water-using appliances. Ion exchange in water softeners operates through a different mechanism and uses different resin types than the ion exchange systems used specifically for PFAS removal.

PFAS Removal by Standard Softeners

Conventional water softeners use cation exchange resin optimized for calcium and magnesium removal. PFAS compounds are anionic (negatively charged) under water treatment conditions, meaning they are not attracted to cation exchange sites and pass through standard softeners essentially unchanged. Multiple independent tests have confirmed that water softening does not remove PFAS and should not be relied upon for PFAS protection.

Anion Exchange for PFAS vs. Softening

PFAS-specific anion exchange resins represent a distinct product category from water softeners. These resins use quaternary ammonium functional groups that attract and retain negatively charged PFAS compounds, achieving PFAS removal rates comparable to or exceeding granular activated carbon. Single-use PFAS anion exchange vessels or regenerable systems using brine solutions are available for residential and commercial applications. These systems address PFAS without the sodium addition associated with water softening.

System Integration Considerations

Households using both a water softener and a PFAS treatment system should understand that these systems serve different purposes and neither substitutes for the other. A reverse osmosis or activated carbon POU system for drinking water PFAS reduction can operate alongside a whole-house softener with no interference between the systems. Water softener brine discharge does not remove PFAS from the water it contacts.
