MARISORB™ Powder vs. Granular Format: Which Application Is Right for Your System?

MARISORB™ is available from Bluelabs in both granular and powder formats, reflecting the reality that PFAS treatment applications span a wide range of system architectures and operational requirements. Choosing the right format is not simply a matter of preference—it directly affects system hydraulics, capital cost, media utilization efficiency, and the feasibility of regeneration or disposal. Understanding the technical trade-offs between granular and powder MARISORB™ enables engineers and procurement teams to specify the right product for their specific application.

Granular MARISORB™: Fixed-Bed Column Applications

Granular MARISORB™ is the appropriate format for fixed-bed adsorption columns—the standard configuration in municipal drinking water treatment, industrial process water treatment, and groundwater remediation pump-and-treat systems. Granular media can be loaded directly into standard cylindrical pressure vessels with underdrain lateral systems, using the same installation procedures established for GAC. Bed depths of 0.5–3 m are typical, with EBCT values of 5–20 minutes depending on the target compound profile and influent concentration.

Granular format enables lead-lag vessel configurations that are essential for continuous treatment without process interruption during media changeout. It also supports backwash operations to remove accumulated suspended solids and restore hydraulic capacity—a key operational advantage for systems treating turbid source waters or effluents with elevated TSS. Granular MARISORB™ is the natural replacement for GAC in existing adsorption columns, requiring no modifications to vessel internals, piping, or control systems.

Powder MARISORB™: Slurry Dosing and High-Turbidity Applications

Powdered MARISORB™ is designed for slurry dosing applications where rapid PFAS removal is required without the infrastructure of a fixed-bed column. In slurry contactors, powdered media is mixed with PFAS-contaminated water in a tank or pipe, allowed to equilibrate for a defined contact time (typically 15–60 minutes), and then separated by coagulation-sedimentation or membrane filtration. This approach is particularly well-suited for emergency response scenarios—such as wildfire-affected water supplies or AFFF spill response—where rapid deployment and minimal infrastructure are priorities.

Powdered format also enables precise dose optimization: the media addition rate can be adjusted in real time based on influent PFAS concentrations, minimizing media consumption and operating cost when influent variability is high. In wastewater treatment applications where PFAS concentrations vary by orders of magnitude across production cycles, powdered slurry dosing is more responsive than fixed-bed systems that must be designed for peak concentrations.

The choice between granular and powder MARISORB™ ultimately comes down to system architecture and operational requirements. Fixed, continuous-flow systems with predictable influent quality benefit from granular media’s lower pressure drop, longer operational cycles, and compatibility with existing infrastructure. Variable-flow, variable-concentration, or emergency applications favor the flexibility and rapid deployment of powder format. Both formats deliver MARISORB™’s core performance advantage: >95% removal across C3–C14 PFAS chain lengths through the fluorophilic binding mechanism that distinguishes it from conventional GAC.
