MARISORB™ vs. Granular Activated Carbon: A Head-to-Head Performance Comparison

Granular activated carbon (GAC) has been the workhorse of PFAS treatment for more than a decade—widely available, well-understood, and supported by a large body of performance data. But as regulatory targets expand beyond PFOA and PFOS to include PFBS, PFHxA, PFHxS, and dozens of short-chain PFAS compounds, GAC’s limitations have become increasingly consequential. MARISORB™, the PFAS-selective adsorbent developed by Bluelabs, was engineered specifically to address the compound coverage gaps that GAC cannot reliably close.

Where GAC Falls Short: The Short-Chain PFAS Problem

GAC removes PFAS primarily through hydrophobic partitioning—the same mechanism that governs removal of many organic micropollutants. This mechanism works well for long-chain PFAS (C8 and above) that have high octanol-water partition coefficients. Independent studies and utility performance data consistently show GAC achieving 95–99% removal of PFOA and PFOS under optimal conditions. However, for short-chain PFAS such as PFBS (C4) and PFHxA (C6), GAC removal drops to 10–30% under typical drinking water conditions, with service life measured in weeks rather than months before breakthrough at regulated concentrations.

The practical consequence for water utilities and industrial operators is that GAC systems permitted before short-chain compounds were regulated may now be failing to meet current or forthcoming standards—without any change in the system itself. Achieving compliance requires either adding a polishing stage or replacing GAC with a media that offers broad-spectrum PFAS capture.

MARISORB™ Performance Across the Chain Length Spectrum

MARISORB™ employs a fluorophilic binding mechanism—a specific chemical affinity for carbon-fluorine bonds rather than relying on hydrophobic partitioning alone. This distinction is critical for short-chain PFAS: because the C-F bond is present in all perfluoroalkyl substances regardless of chain length, MARISORB™ maintains high adsorption affinity even for PFBS and PFHxA where GAC effectiveness collapses. Certified testing by KCL (Korean Conformity Laboratories) under NSF/ANSI 53 protocols confirms >95% removal of PFBS, PFHxA, PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, PFNA, and other C3–C14 PFAS species.

In a direct head-to-head comparison under equivalent EBCT conditions, MARISORB™ consistently delivers three to five times greater service life (expressed in bed volumes to 10% breakthrough) for short-chain PFAS relative to GAC. For long-chain compounds, MARISORB™ performs comparably to premium coal-based GAC while offering the additional benefit of comprehensive short-chain coverage in a single media bed.

For water treatment engineers evaluating alternatives to GAC, MARISORB™ represents a technically superior solution for sites where the full PFAS regulatory target list must be addressed. Its NSF/ANSI 53 certification and compatibility with existing GAC vessel infrastructure make it a practical replacement option rather than a disruptive technology requiring new system architecture.
