When Whole-House Filtration Is Warranted
Most PFAS exposure from drinking water occurs through consumption and food preparation — activities concentrated at the kitchen tap. Point-of-use filtration at the kitchen sink addresses the majority of water-borne PFAS intake. However, whole-house filtration is warranted when PFAS skin absorption during bathing is a concern, when there are multiple household members with high water use, or when the entire plumbing system may be contaminated from prior unfiltered water exposure.
Research on PFAS dermal absorption during showering is mixed — some studies suggest limited absorption of high-molecular-weight PFAS through intact skin, while short-chain PFAS may have greater dermal bioavailability. For households in high-contamination areas, a precautionary whole-house approach is reasonable.
System Components and Design
A typical whole-house PFAS system includes a sediment pre-filter (5–20 micron) to remove particulates that would foul carbon or RO stages, followed by a primary PFAS treatment stage — either a GAC tank or RO system. For well water with varied chemistry, a water softener may be needed before RO to protect the membrane from scale.
GAC whole-house systems use a tank filled with granular activated carbon through which all household water passes. Tank sizing depends on daily water use and desired contact time. A minimum empty bed contact time of 5–10 minutes is recommended for effective PFAS removal. Tanks should be sized for the household’s peak flow rate to prevent channeling at high demand.
Maintenance Requirements
Whole-house GAC systems require periodic carbon replacement — typically every 2–5 years depending on water volume and PFAS concentration. Annual whole-house RO systems require membrane replacement every 2–5 years and pre/post-filter changes more frequently. Sediment pre-filters may need replacement every 3–6 months.
Professional installation and periodic water quality testing are important components of a whole-house system. Testing filtered output water annually verifies that the system continues to meet performance expectations. Some vendors offer monitoring services that track filter performance indicators and provide replacement reminders.
